I've recently noticed that local computing (edge computing) is becoming more prevalent in smart lighting solutions. Many new products integrate MCUs directly into the fixtures to process sensor data locally, reducing reliance on the cloud. Compared to cloud-based solutions, local computing offers lower latency and better privacy, but firmware updates and algorithm optimization might be more complex. I'm curious about how this trend might impact end-user experience. In the long run, will localization become the mainstream approach?

I've run into this issue in several projects too, especially in commercial lighting systems. Last year, we used smart fixtures with local MCUs in an office automation setup; processing sensor data directly inside the light and responding instantly made a noticeable difference—users really picked up on it. In that system, the light adjusted brightness based on sensor input locally, and when we measured the delay, it was under 50ms—something you just can't achieve with a cloud-based system. Then there’s privacy. At the company, GDPR compliance meant being super careful with customer data, and since everything was processed locally, no consumer behavior data ever left the building. Firmware updates did cause some headaches—those MCUs needed thorough testing—but in the long run, I think local processing is the way to go. From a user experience standpoint, systems like this are going to be the future standard, in my opinion.
