Smart plugs are tiny gadgets that connect to your local network via Wi-Fi or ZigBee (rarely Bluetooth) and let you remotely control the power to anything plugged into them through an app or voice assistant. They usually work like this: the plug receives a command from your router, executes it (turns power on/off), and sends confirmation back to the manufacturer’s server (often via the cloud). So even if you're in another city, you can turn off an iron you forgot to switch off. From a networking perspective, these are classic IoT devices running on TCP/IP, and security depends on the manufacturer—ideally, they should use encrypted traffic (TLS) and regular firmware updates. Now, reliability. If your Wi-Fi drops out occasionally, smart plugs can become a headache: they either lose connection or switch to a local mode (if they support LAN-based control via the app), but 90% of the time they only work with a stable internet connection. Longevity? Depends on the model and brand. Cheap Chinese knockoffs (like Tuya or Smart Life) might start glitching after a few months, while reputable brands (TP-Link Tapo, Shelly, Meross) can run for years without issues. Another thing to watch out for is security—some plugs (especially older ones) have had vulnerabilities that let attackers hijack control or even access your local network. So if your Wi-Fi is unreliable, it’s better to go with a ZigBee model that uses a hub (like the Philips Hue Smart Plug) to avoid relying on your router. Or plan ahead with a backup setup—like plugging the smart plug into an Ethernet cable if possible.
