Lately, smart plugs have become a trend in homes, but how reliable are they really? What about the risk of electric shock, fire hazards, or what happens during Wi-Fi/Zigbee outages? Also, is it worth managing all devices this way, or is it just an unnecessary expense? What are your thoughts?

One of the biggest concerns about smart plugs is their long-term electrical load capacity. Many users ask, "If I plug all these devices into one outlet, will it catch fire?" Well, buddy, the key here is quality. Cheap brands that source their plugs from China’s bulk market often use low-quality circuits, cheap plastic, and non-standard fuses. So, if you don’t go for certified products like those from reputable local brands, devices like refrigerators or heaters that draw constant high current can overheat the plug and even pose a fire risk. Plus, smart plugs’ screens and sensors can act as small heat sources themselves. With a good smart plug, you need to make sure everything has a proper certification (UL, CE, TÜV). Then there’s this issue: what if your home’s electrical wiring is outdated? In an old building—especially apartments over 20 years old—using smart plugs can be risky, kind of like charging 5-6 phones with fast adapters. If your system is protected by 16A fuses and your wiring has a low copper content, smart plugs add extra load. In the projects I’ve consulted on, we’ve seen small fire alarms triggered when smart plugs were used without upgrading the wiring. So, it’s worth asking an electrician: is your wiring up to standard, or is using these plugs the real risk?
