I'm curious, what's the difference between smart plugs and regular plugs? How do they work, can they connect to the internet for example? Should we be concerned about security? Can they measure energy consumption, or are they just for turning things on and off?
What is the working principle of smart plugs?

It looks like they've just added an LED or Wi-Fi module to a regular outlet, yeah. You can connect it to the internet and control it from your tablet, but for security reasons, I'm a bit worried—what if someone in your family gets hacked and the power goes out? And get this, they can even show you the energy consumption, so you can see which devices are drawing too much power.
They transfer electricity just like normal outlets, but they also have Wi-Fi/Bluetooth modules to connect to the internet and communicate with smart devices. There are models that don't measure energy, only those that work for remote on/off functions, so you have to be careful not to get confused when buying one.
