I'm considering smart plugs as my first step into home automation. What are their advantages? What should I keep in mind during installation? Which security aspects should I pay special attention to? What are your general recommendations? In which practical scenarios can I use them? Should I go for wireless or wired options?

I think you almost experienced the exact same situation as me! When I switched from Android to iPhone last year, I invested in smart plugs to improve the small automation in my home. For my first try, I decided to use the Xiaomi Mi Smart Plug because it was both affordable and supported HomeKit (yes, thanks to Apple). At first glance, the setup seemed complicated, but it was actually so simple that it connected to Wi-Fi instantly when I plugged it in. The biggest advantage was eliminating devices that wasted electricity—like finally getting rid of the "standby mode" light that used to stay on all night. I realized that the most important thing to pay attention to in terms of security was network security. Even though it looks no different from a regular plug, since it allows a device to connect to your home network, having a password-protected Wi-Fi—or at least one that isn’t easily cracked—is a must. One thing that’s been on my mind is "remote access"—if you connect your system to the cloud, I do worry a bit about the security of data passing through Chinese servers. For now, I’m only managing it locally, and that’s been fine. What I love most in practical use is setting my iron to turn on in the morning so when I get home in the evening, I don’t have to deal with a cold iron—it’s a lifesaver!
