I've seen a lot of discussions about smart plugs lately and it's been on my mind. Do they really serve a purpose or are they just a new toy for geeks? In theory, they allow you to remotely cut power, schedule times, or even monitor consumption... But in practice, they can also be a source of bugs if the network fails or the app crashes. Besides making a connected bulb blink on its own, what concrete benefits do they actually provide? For those of you who have tested them (or just looked into them), do they really change your life?

I've had a TP-Link Kasa for 3 months now and it's already saved me twice by letting me turn off the kettle when I forgot it on. Without it, there's no way to turn it off remotely. That said, one day the network crapped out and I had to manually restart the plug, meh. But for 20 bucks, I'm happy with it.
