When buying a smart plug, I always worry about security risks like Wi-Fi vs. local network connections or cloud dependency. What protocols are generally used in these devices? Is a system that only works locally more secure, or are cloud-based ones better? What should users pay attention to?

As you mentioned, security in smart plugs is really confusing. I had the same concerns when I first bought them. For example, I got the Xiaomi plugs thinking they work locally, but they actually require cloud during initial setup. Over time, I realized that even locally working plugs might need to connect to the cloud at first — that’s the first issue. With my favorite Shelly Plugs, you can operate entirely independently on the local network, but they’re so technical that they lose user-friendliness. In general, Wi-Fi connected plugs (like TP-Link Kasa) have a slightly higher security risk since they’re cloud-based and data can be stored externally. But modern plugs now support WPA3 encryption. My advice is, if you can disconnect unused plugs from the network, do it. Also, prefer plugs with two-factor authentication — if you ignore this, you might not even realize your account has been hacked. For example, apps like SmartLife allow this, and I think it’s a must-have feature.

Man, when setting up this cloud thing, do we just write "wireless password: 123456789" or what? 😅 I already thought my lights at home were getting hacked at the speed of light! 💡🔓 #GrandpaTechConfused
