Smart plugs were one of the fastest-growing IoT device categories in 2024, with a 30% increase in user adoption. While they promise energy savings, security concerns persist. Although newer protocols like Thread and Matter, along with local processing capabilities, have reduced latency issues, risks like cloud dependency and cyberattacks remain. Do you think these devices can form the foundation of home automation in the long run, or will local solutions be preferred? What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in practice?

Smart plugs are actually a huge upgrade compared to Wi-Fi smart sockets, much like how 4K cameras replaced Full HD. Thanks to Thread and Matter protocols, latency is almost nonexistent, and the ability to operate locally on the network significantly reduces cloud dependency. Frequent disconnections or slow responses from the past are now a thing of the past. Of course, they're not completely immune to cyberattacks, but at least they receive faster updates to patch security vulnerabilities. In my opinion, these devices, along with advanced protocols, are laying the groundwork for long-term home automation.
