Smart plugs promise to control home appliances' energy from your phone, schedule times, and create routines. However, doubts arise about whether they truly provide significant savings or if they're more about convenience than efficiency. Additionally, integration with voice assistants and data security are topics that spark differing opinions. What are your experiences with the setup and reliability of these devices? Do you think automating plugs is worth the time and resources, or is it just a passing trend? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

About a year ago, I installed a set of TP-Link Kasa Smart Plugs in my living room and kitchen. At first, I mainly wanted to use the standby power monitoring feature—the app showed me that my TV was consuming around 0.8 kWh per day in standby mode. By using the timer function, I was able to automatically shut the device off at night, and since then, I’ve calculated a savings of about 8% in annual energy consumption for that device. However, the real value lies in the convenience: I can link the hallway light to Alexa for on/off control, and I can even schedule ironing in the app so that the heating only kicks in when I start using the device. At first, I was skeptical about reliability because the Wi-Fi signal in the bedroom is a bit weak. After a quick firmware update, though, the connection has remained stable, and the switches respond almost instantly—even when mobile data is under heavy load. For security, I immediately changed the default password and keep the firmware updated regularly; so far, there haven’t been any unusual data access attempts. All in all, when properly configured, these Smart Plugs deliver both energy savings and genuine convenience, and they’re not just a short-lived trend.
