Just picked up a few smart plugs to automate some non-smart appliances. Initial tests with scheduling and voice control are cool, but I'm wondering if the energy monitoring feature is actually useful in practice. Anyone else using these long-term and seeing real benefits beyond the novelty? How do you decide which devices are actually worth automating vs just living with the dumb switch?

I’ve been using smart plugs for a couple of years now, mostly for our older appliances like the coffee maker and TV. The energy monitoring is handy if you're curious about power hogs around the house—for me, it uncovered the microwave as the sneaky energy guzzler when not in use. Still, I’d argue it’s not enough to justify the cost alone unless you’re actively trying to cut usage or have solar metering. For comparison, I paired them with a smart thermostat and honestly got more consistent savings there because heating/cooling dominates the bill. Smart plugs shine for convenience (e.g., “Alexa, turn off the TV when I leave”), but if you’re disciplined with manual switches, they might feel like overkill. Depends on your goals—nudging habits vs. cold hard data.
