In my home automation experiments, I prefer using **Zigbee** networking. There are two main reasons for this: first, power consumption—Zigbee devices have standby power consumption of just a few microamps, which has almost no impact on the overall electricity bill; second, network scalability—Zigbee can form a self-organizing mesh network, where multiple plugs can relay signals to each other, significantly reducing the risk of single-point failures. As long as the gateway supports common Zigbee protocols (such as Zigbee 3.0), adding new devices later requires almost no reconfiguration, keeping maintenance costs relatively low. In contrast, **Wi‑Fi** direct connections may be the simplest to set up, but they suffer from response delays when the router is under heavy load or the signal is unstable. Additionally, each plug consumes an IP address, causing the router’s NAT table to expand rapidly—this isn’t ideal for long-term operation. **Local control** (such as Bluetooth or proprietary RF) does excel in offline reliability, but its functionality is limited, often only supporting basic on/off control. It lacks features like cloud logging, remote monitoring, and integration with other smart devices, which can feel out of place in a complete smart home ecosystem. In summary, I’d choose Zigbee as my top option and implement dual-mode redundancy at critical nodes (such as the main power controller): keeping local control for offline reliability while syncing with the Zigbee gateway and cloud platform. This approach balances power efficiency, reliability, and flexible integration. If you already have a robust Wi‑Fi network and don’t have too many devices, Wi‑Fi is still a viable solution—just make sure to plan for router capacity and security.
