Years ago, I bought a Fitbit smartwatch, and from the moment I first strapped it to my wrist, an addiction I couldn’t live without began. One morning, after waking up, I checked my sleep data and realized I’d slept for 8 hours instead of 6—so deeply that I hadn’t even noticed! Strangely enough, that watch not only improved my sleep quality but also gave me insight into my stress levels. Of course, my favorite story about it is when its GPS module saved me during a hike where I got lost. Since I was on a mountain trail, my phone had no signal, but the watch’s GPS guided me back to the trailhead in under 20 minutes. That’s when I realized smartwatches aren’t just trackers—they can actually be lifesavers.

As a beginner, I also built a simple smartwatch prototype using an Arduino with a Bluetooth module (HC-05). I went with the ESP32 as the processor and used the MAX30102 for heart rate and the MPU6050 for step counting. For battery life, I tried a LiPo battery and low-power mode—so I got about 2-3 days of use. If you want to start your own project, you can begin with BLE libraries in the Arduino IDE.
