Today, many smart home assistants store voice recordings while removing identifying information (name, location, etc.) and present them as "anonymized." But is that enough? According to a U.S. study, 87% of anonymized data is sufficient to trace a person's identity backward. While manufacturers claim strict security standards in their data processing, the existence of open APIs for third-party developers or the risk of security breaches during cloud storage is not something to be taken lightly.
Then there are locally processed systems—like Home Assistant, where everything runs on a mini PC at home. Here, data never leaves the user's device, which is a huge privacy advantage. However, these devices rely on local AI models, which means sacrificing performance and functionality. So, are users really giving up functionality for "security"? Or will mass adoption only happen when manufacturers truly address privacy concerns?
Cloud storage versus local servers for voice recordings comes down to the core security risk.
