Last month, I experimented with integrating Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomePod on the same Wi-Fi network in my home. The most impressive part was that most commands were processed locally (edge computing)—for example, when I said, "dim the lights and play music," the audio was shared between devices in less than a second, barely touching the cloud. The near-zero delay made it incredibly smooth, especially when watching movies at night, as the lights would dim instantly.
Privacy-wise, the biggest win was that voice recordings were encrypted and stored locally on the devices. While some apps still collected background data at first, thanks to edge computing, about 80% of my personal conversations were processed directly on the devices, with only the results (like light status) sent to the cloud. This drastically reduced the risk of data leaks. However, I noticed that integration standards aren’t fully polished yet—sometimes the assistants clash when both try to handle the same command, like "play playlist," highlighting the lack of a unified API. Improving this would make multi-assistant setups much smoother.
