Over the past few years, smartwatches have been getting a lot of buzz. But do these gadgets actually add value to daily life, or is it just a passing trend? When it comes to health tracking, notifications, and battery life, where do we draw the line between useful and overkill? Personally, I wonder if they're worth the price for features that a smartphone can already handle. What about you—do you find them essential or unnecessary?

I think it depends on your usage! For example, a fitness tracker like Fitbit is useful for monitoring your physical activity all day without taking out your phone, whereas a smartphone might be enough for basic notifications. But for someone who only uses health apps or reminders, I’d see it as an unnecessary gadget.

I switched to a smartwatch two years ago after always thinking it was a useless gadget. The switch didn’t come from AI or apps, but from a real problem: I go mountain biking several times a week, and keeping my phone in my pocket with the screen on to track distance and elevation gain was a nightmare. A Garmin Fenix 7 changed everything. The built-in GPS lasts 10 hours in training mode, the watch displays my stats in real time without relying on my phone, and I can even take quick calls without pulling out my phone. The return on investment is clear for me. I stopped missing important calls mid-climb and reduced wear and tear on my phone by leaving it alone. The health tracking? Limited utility unless you really want to analyze your sleep or stress—it’s just a bonus for me. On the other hand, battery life is a real factor: a watch like the Garmin lasts for days, while a typical smartwatch needs charging every night. So yeah, it’s worth it if you have specific needs beyond notifications. Otherwise, stick with your phone—it’s simpler.
