Yeah, I was super confused about this too when I first got my smartwatch! At first, I thought it was some fancy term for a normal heart rate sensor, but nope. Mine actually showed "elevated heart rate" one day, and I panicked—turns out, it was because I was just climbing the stairs too fast and the PPG sensor detected the rush of blood flow.
