The most pressing challenge, in my opinion, is reliable sense-and-avoid technology. Right now, many manufacturers still rely on basic radar or ultrasonic sensor systems, which quickly reach their limits with small drones in urban environments when multiple objects are involved. A redundant combination of LiDAR, optical flow analysis, and GNSS correction (RTK/PPK) can already reduce the probability of collisions by >99%, provided firmware updates are consistently rolled out via secure OTA channels. Without this technical foundation, any regulatory restrictions will only be a band-aid on a long-term safety gap. Stricter flight restrictions, such as mandatory flight zone registrations and maximum altitudes of 120 meters, make sense as long as the technology isn't yet mature across the board. Once the mentioned sensor fusion algorithms pass certification tests (e.g., according to EUROCAE ED-307), the focus should shift to dynamic approvals and "performance-based airspace management," allowing drones to communicate with the UTM network (Unmanned Traffic Management) in real time and resolve airspace conflicts autonomously. Therefore, collaboration between authorities and manufacturers must happen in two steps: First, an open technology standard workshop where representatives from EASA, FAA, and national aviation authorities work alongside OEMs to define minimum requirements for sensor redundancy and cryptography. Second, a joint test field program where pilot projects in controlled urban areas (e.g., smart city initiatives) verify the interoperability of UTM platforms and drone onboard software. This iterative approach ensures innovation isn’t stifled but instead fostered through clear, technically sound guidelines.

The most urgent points, in my opinion, are reliable collision avoidance and data privacy. We've already seen with self-driving cars how crucial redundant sensor systems and a clearly defined emergency mode are – the same principles should apply to autonomous drones. While vehicles already have V2X communication protocols as standard in many markets, drones lack a unified "airspace handshake" that can inform both pilots and authorities in real time. Without such technical safety mechanisms, any restrictive flight regulations would only be a band-aid that doesn’t address the core issue. In my view, collaboration between regulatory authorities and manufacturers should mirror the rollout of 5G networks: early involvement of manufacturers in standardization processes, shared test fields, and transparent data evaluation. This way, we can simultaneously foster innovation and strengthen public acceptance – much like with smartphone cameras, where manufacturers work closely with data protection and security authorities to safely introduce new features. Through such cooperative models, we can implement both technical and regulatory solutions in a timely manner.
