When comparing electric vehicles (EVs) to gasoline-powered cars, the latter seem more harmful to the climate in the short term at least. Gasoline engines continuously emit CO2, while EVs can produce fewer greenhouse gases not only during use but also in their production—provided they are charged with renewable energy. However, we must not overlook the environmental cost of battery production; lithium and cobalt mining can cause serious damage to local ecosystems.
In urban settings, EVs have a clear advantage because they recover energy during braking and the electric motor responds instantly in stop-and-go traffic. On long trips, though, the charging network is still inadequate, and "range anxiety" remains an issue. For example, while Tesla’s Supercharger Network works well, standardized fast-charging stations are still lacking nationwide. I think EVs will be part of the future, but they won’t be the sole solution—instead, they’ll need to work alongside other transportation methods (public transit, bicycles, hydrogen cars).
