In recent years, there have been significant advancements in battery life and charging speed. In your opinion, which battery technology (solid-state, lithium-sulfur, etc.) will dominate in the next five years? Or will improvements to current systems be sufficient? What should stand out in terms of balancing cost, safety, and performance?

Fellow contributors, it has to be acknowledged that developments in battery technology are exciting. However, I believe that so far, improvements have largely been centered around lithium-ion batteries. When I consider the claims about solid-state batteries dominating the future, and compare them with the energy densities promised by lithium-sulfur or metal-air systems, there are serious question marks over which direction the industry will actually take. The fact that solid-state batteries are difficult and costly to produce—costing 3-4 times more than lithium-ion—makes one wonder whether this is a serious revolution or just a marketing ploy. There’s no denying the safety advantages of solid-state batteries; using a dry electrolyte minimizes the risk of fire. But when it comes to performance-focused discussions, while it’s great to hear that solid-state batteries with lithium-metal anodes can achieve over 1,000 cycles and reach 400 Wh/kg, it will likely be a long time before we see this in commercial devices. Meanwhile, continuous improvements in current lithium-ion batteries—such as using silicon and phosphorus in anodes—have already delivered a 20-30% capacity boost. These "super lithium-ion" versions also show significant strides in chemical stability and charge-discharge cycles. In the end, I believe the industry will follow an evolutionary path rather than a revolutionary one. I’m not one of those who think solid-state batteries are the future of the future; however, it’s clear this technology is receiving serious investment. As costs decrease and production scales up, they may carve out a place in the market within 5-10 years, but I’d confidently say lithium-ion won’t easily give up its dominance. As for alternative chemistries, lithium-sulfur batteries still haven’t achieved a stable enough performance-to-degradation ratio. Outside of electric vehicles and mobile devices, I think we’ll see improvements in existing systems. If anyone wants to claim this debate, I’ll proudly say I’m the last defender of lithium-ion.
