Solid-state batteries seem to be the star of almost every EV discussion these days, but whenever they come up, the word "yet" always follows. I recommended a system based on them to a customer two years ago—the price was 40% higher than standard LFP, and even in the third year, the manufacturer was still honoring warranties. Of course, there are clear advantages in installation (weight, charging speed, heat management), but "yet" it’s not a price everyone is willing to pay. Sodium-ion is also gaining attention—I’ve heard about it in Tesla’s recent patents—and if price is the primary factor, it shows promise. But personally, I think hydrogen will carve out its own space in pickups and commercial vehicles. Just last month, I secured an order for Category 7 vehicles with 500 km range and 15-minute refueling, convincing the customer that it could transform rural logistics operations.
As for electrification, many U.S. states are already struggling with grid strain, especially during evening peaks. For me, the solution is local: rooftop solar + microgrid installations with batteries. One of my clients installed a 30kW system for excavation work, saving 20% annually on rental costs and recouping most of the investment through state CO2 credit billing. Can everyone set up something like this? No. But for those who can’t produce their own solutions, hydrogen fueling stations powered by renewables are on the rise. I believe the future scenario will be hybrid: electricity in cities, hydrogen or ammonia-based fuels for long-haul and heavy loads. As costs drop, we’ll see which becomes dominant—but until solid-state batteries hit market parity, I can confidently say LFP will remain the leader.
I personally have high hopes for solid-state batteries. They seem to offer better energy density than lithium-ion, improved safety, and faster charging speeds compared to many competitors. Of course, the cost and scalability are still question marks, but I think we might see them in the first vehicles within a year or two. As for local production, hydrogen seems a bit expensive, and with the rise of renewables in Europe and America, the electric grid could keep up in the future.
