Fast charging in urban areas helps, but without infrastructure in homes (especially in flats without garages), electric cars remain inaccessible to many. For example, in my city there are still neighborhoods where installing a charging point at home is an endless administrative process. Local regulation makes the difference: in some countries they require a minimum percentage of parking spaces with charging in new buildings, while in others there are no clear incentives.

Batteries are another critical issue. Ranges of 400–500 km are now standard, but in extreme cold, that drops by 20–30%. Regulation plays a huge role here: in California, for example, mandating that manufacturers sell only fully electric cars by 2035 accelerated investments in batteries with better cold-weather performance. In Europe, though, the lack of harmonized technical standards is holding back local supply chain projects. Effective strategies? Prioritize regulations that require pre-installed electrical setups in new buildings (as in the Netherlands) and subsidies for converting private garages—not just public charging points.
