The biggest drawback to PPG sensor reliability that I’ve experienced is how much skin tone and lighting conditions affect the readings. For example, because I have darker skin, my heart rate would always read 5-10 bpm lower when I exercised outdoors—but that gap narrowed indoors under better lighting. The hardware plays a big role here too; when I compared cheap Chinese smartwatches to an Apple Watch, I noticed a clear correlation between sensor placement and measurement stability. As for software, it mostly comes down to how the algorithm processes the data. Fitbit’s "resting heart rate" readings, for instance, tend to be close to the actual value because the app accounts for long-term trends. I’ve even recorded raw sensor data myself and analyzed it with third-party apps—turns out, it’s less about the sensor’s quality and more about how well it’s calibrated and the assumptions the software makes.
