The balance between battery life and performance in smartwatches is becoming an increasingly fine line. While newer devices—especially models like the Apple Watch Series 9 or Galaxy Watch 6 Classic—seem to handle this balance internally, looking back, it’s clear how short-lived this solution really is. Current chipsets (mostly built on 3nm or 4nm processes) do optimize power consumption, but the constant pressure from background apps and continuous monitoring inevitably drains the battery. On Android Wear-based watches, for example, GPS running nonstop, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth always active, and high refresh rates (up to 120Hz) drastically shorten battery life. Apple faces a similar challenge with its A15 Bionic-based watches (like the Apple Watch SE 2), though software optimizations do help fine-tune performance. Still, to get more than 24 hours of use, you often have to disable continuous monitoring or switch to power-saving mode—meaning "finding balance" really comes down to limiting performance. So, is there a long-term solution? A hardware-focused approach might help. Future models in the NTX series, with more integrated GPUs and NPUs, could deliver efficient performance even with constant monitoring and background apps. But for now, user-side optimizations matter too—like turning on GPS only during workouts, adjusting screen brightness, and delaying app syncs—all of which can significantly extend battery life. When comparing platforms, Wear OS still lags in battery optimization, though Samsung’s improvements with One UI Watch are promising.
