Which display technology in smartwatches is a serious selection criterion for you? 1) E-ink (electronic ink) – minimalist, low blue light, long battery life 2) Full-color (LCD/OLED) – sharp, vibrant interface, readable in all conditions 3) Hybrid (auto-switching) Why would you make such a choice?

This is one of the biggest dilemmas in the smartwatch market. First off, display technology isn’t just about visual appeal—it directly impacts how you use the device. E-ink (electronic ink) screens stand out for their long battery life and reduced eye strain, making them ideal for users who read a lot or rely on constant notifications. However, they fall short in apps that need vibrant colors or rapid interface changes, like map navigation or gaming. Full-color screens (LCD/OLED) are a must-have for modern smartwatches. They offer touch interfaces, vivid colors, and readability in any condition, which is especially appealing to fitness trackers and power users. The advantage of OLED is its perfect black representation and ultra-thin design. Hybrid solutions (auto-switching displays) seem like the most flexible option in theory, but in practice, most manufacturers struggle to optimize the transition smoothly. My personal recommendation? Choose based on your needs. If your smartwatch is mainly for basic notifications and fitness tracking, e-ink is more than enough. But if you rely on heavy app usage, a full-color screen is a must. OLED strikes the best balance here, especially AMOLED variants, which deliver exceptional brightness and contrast.
