Gesture recognition is a key component of many modern wearables. What advantages and disadvantages do you see in integrating complex gestures into the user interface? Are there proven methods to minimize misinterpretations while keeping the user experience smooth? How would you balance functionality and ease of use in this context?

Gesture recognition makes smartwatches much more intuitive, especially when simple hand or finger movements like raising your wrist to unlock or rotating it to scroll are used. In my daily life, swiping left to dismiss a notification has proven very practical—quick and without touching the screen—and I’ve experienced the same issue with complex gestures: Often, a random hand motion is mistakenly interpreted as a command, leading to unexpected actions. To reduce misinterpretations, I rely on combined thresholds: in addition to gesture recognition, the duration and position of the arm are taken into account, and a brief vibration feedback immediately confirms whether the gesture was detected. Additionally, a configurable "recognition mode" helps maintain a balance between functionality and comfort by only activating frequently used gestures. This keeps the user experience smooth without the watch being overly sensitive.
