Which one do you think is more important for protecting your IoT devices? 1) Using devices with default settings without changing them (just applying updates), 2) Taking advanced security measures (e.g., strong passwords, network isolation, firmware modifications), or 3) Fully entrusting protection responsibility to your network provider? Why?

Default IoT security is basically a security *illusion*. Manufacturers often rush devices to market at the lowest possible cost, leaving default settings (boring admin/admin, HTTP, automated device discovery, etc.) wide open to simple attacks that target everyone. Updates matter, sure—but manufacturer support can be sketchy, especially for budget models. For example, leaving an unpatched FTP service enabled on your smart fridge doesn’t just let your neighbor on the same LAN monitor your heating habits; it could also turn your appliance into a botnet zombie. Sticking to defaults is like outsourcing responsibility to someone else: you’re trusting the manufacturer to make the right choices for you. Does advanced protection really matter for everyone? Honestly, it might be overkill for casual home users, but simple steps can slash risk significantly. Network isolation (VLANs, putting IoT devices on a separate IoT network), strong authentication (unique passwords for every device), and flashing custom firmware—yes, even on a smart bulb—aren’t just for industrial IoT clusters. Of course, offloading all responsibility to your ISP is the same as saying, “I don’t care.” A weak default WPS button on your modem or an ISP that doesn’t segment IoT traffic is an open door for attackers. Ultimately, while you don’t have to reject manufacturer responsibility outright, taking extra steps creates a middle ground—minimizing risk without sacrificing usability.
