Lately, IoT devices have been infiltrating everyday life—from smart thermostats to wearable sensors. This raises concerns about how safe it is to store and transmit personal data through these gadgets. What encryption and authentication methods are considered the most reliable? Should we use local data storage instead of cloud services? What practices do you follow when setting up home IoT devices to minimize the risk of leaks? Share your experience and opinions! How do you assess the impact of automatic firmware updates on security? Do you have recommendations for choosing secure network protocols?

Recently, I installed a smart thermostat and several Wi-Fi outlets in my home to control power via my phone. First off, I replaced the default passwords with long random strings and enabled two-factor authentication on the router. I configured all devices to use WPA3 encryption and set them up on a separate VLAN—this isolates the IoT network from my main home network, which includes computers and smartphones. I disabled automatic firmware updates and instead subscribed to manufacturer newsletters, manually checking update signatures before installing them. This helps avoid unexpected "bug bounty" situations that sometimes pop up in automatic updates. As for data storage, I completely ditched the cloud—all logs and settings are saved on a local NAS with AES-256 encryption and enabled backups. When setting up new sensors, I always verify the presence of TLS certificates, and if they're missing, I set up a proxy server to add network-level encryption. While this approach takes a bit more time, it significantly reduces the risk of personal data leaks and makes my home IoT infrastructure much more manageable.
