Hey everyone, I keep hearing about IoT, but I can't quite wrap my head around what it actually is. What technologies do these systems use to connect and automate devices? Does just having an internet connection suffice, or are there other architectures involved? How does the whole thing generally work?
What is IoT and how does it work?

IoT (Internet of Things) works like an ecosystem where, for example, a sensor-equipped flower pot is connected to a smart home system. While a regular pot only has soil and a plant, the IoT version adds a moisture sensor, a Wi-Fi module, and a microcontroller. The sensor measures the soil moisture and sends the data to the microcontroller, which then transmits it to the cloud—allowing you to receive alerts on your phone, much like a thermostat measuring room temperature and turning the heater on or off.
In real-world systems, this isn’t just about internet connectivity but follows a three-layer architecture: the **perception layer** (sensors), the **network layer** (using protocols like Bluetooth, LoRaWAN, or 5G), and the **application layer** (cloud or local servers). So, IoT isn’t just about Wi-Fi—it adapts to different scenarios, much like machines in a factory production line communicating via radio waves, not just relying on a single wireless standard.
Man, when it comes to IoT, I'm embarrassed because I can't even use my smart iron properly 😅 Do these devices always connect to each other saying "Bro, my sensor's broken!" or something? 📶⚡
