Where do you prefer to store your data when developing IoT systems? Options: cloud-based solutions (AWS IoT, Google Cloud IoT) or on-premise solutions (Raspberry Pi-based). Why? Is security, cost, synchronization speed, or another factor the priority?

I've been using Arduino/RPi for ages, but ever since I switched to an iPhone last year (yes, I'm that *switcher* still crying over physical buttons), I started setting up a small IoT system at home to control lights and sensors. At first, everything ran on a local Raspberry Pi with Mosquitto and Node-RED—I trusted that "if it's in my house and I don't put it online, it's more secure." But what a mess: every time the power went out or I changed the router (yes, that's me), everything collapsed like a house of cards. Until one day, the microSD card got corrupted, and I lost months of temperature sensor data.
That was when I thought, "Dude, this doesn’t scale."
I switched to AWS IoT for reliability (yes, I know about *Schrems II* and all that in Europe, but at least automatic backups and redundancy are free). Now the data goes straight to the cloud, I have a Home Assistant dashboard updating in real time, and best of all—if my Pi dies or my WiFi gets hacked, I don’t lose anything. That said, privacy still bothers me, so I enabled default encryption and check permissions every month. It’s not perfect, but at least I’m no longer afraid a power outage will erase months of work. Though… the nostalgia for *all-local* still lingers. Anyone else change their mind like I did?
