What are the pros and cons of using servo motors in robotic applications? Besides providing position precision, what other advantages do they offer? What are the biggest challenges with this technology? In your opinion, in which scenarios should systems with servo motors be preferred?

Servo motors offer much more precise positioning and speed control compared to stepper motors. For example, stepper motors maintain their magnetic position even when stationary, but servo motors continuously receive position feedback (usually from an encoder) and make corrections, making them much more stable in dynamic movements. Similarly, servo motors experience less delay in sudden speed changes compared to DC motors because they can adjust speed and torque instantly. As for the challenges, the biggest drawback of servo motors is their price. For instance, a 10W stepper motor costs around $20-$30, while a servo motor of the same power can go up to $100. Additionally, in some applications, servo motors can be overly sensitive, leading to vibration or noise issues, especially at high speeds. That’s why I prefer servo motors for systems like robotic arms, drones, or precision assembly lines. Stepper motors, on the other hand, are more cost-effective and better suited for simpler applications, such as 3D printers.
