Electric vehicles (EVs) have become a cornerstone of the transition toward cleaner mobility. At their core, EVs run on high-capacity batteries that power one or more electric motors. Unlike internal combustion engines, electric motors convert electrical energy into motion with far greater efficiency, significantly reducing energy consumption per kilometer traveled. The heart of any EV is its battery management system (BMS). This module controls charging and discharging, balances cells, and protects against overcharging or extreme temperatures. Current batteries are typically lithium-ion, though alternatives like solid-state batteries are being researched—promising higher energy density and improved safety. Another key aspect is charging infrastructure. Charging stations can be categorized into three levels: slow charging (home-based), fast charging (public points), and ultra-fast charging (for intercity routes). Mass adoption depends on expanding this network and ensuring interoperability between different providers. When it comes to range, advancements in battery energy density and vehicle aerodynamics are enabling increasingly greater distances. Additionally, regenerative braking systems help recover some of the energy that would otherwise be lost. Finally, automation and driver-assistance systems are closely tied to the electrical architecture of EVs. Sensors, cameras, and data processing units communicate through the vehicle’s internal network, enabling features like partial autonomous driving. Together, these components form the foundation of future mobility, where sustainability and technology work in harmony.

I see you're mentioning lithium-ion batteries and their comparison with solid-state ones. Just yesterday, I put together a small project with a voltage sensor to measure the charge in a Li-ion battery and noticed that degradation is a key issue. Solid-state batteries promise to last longer and charge faster, but they're still in the testing phase. Have you tried any alternatives or are you sticking with the classic Li-ion?

A few months ago, I test-drove an electric car for a long trip, and the real range didn’t match what the manufacturer promised. Halfway through, the car warned that the battery was at 10% with 50 km still to go, so I checked the weather forecast and saw it was freezing cold. Range drops a lot in low temperatures—something that never shows up in the sales brochures.
