Lately, we’ve been hearing a lot about autonomous systems, but how much do we really know about their reliability? Especially in complex traffic situations, how well can they perform? Do you think they’re reliable enough, or do we still need human intervention?

The biggest concern about autonomous driving technology is probably its performance in complex traffic situations. For example, when I have my students build Arduino-based autonomous vehicles for robotics projects, I see how even simple lane-following systems struggle in unexpected scenarios (sudden obstacles, pedestrians crossing). In real-world traffic, the algorithm needs to predict every possibility and react almost as fast as human reflexes—which is still in its infancy. But I should also mention that systems like Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) or Waymo’s services in Phoenix are quite reliable in routine parts of traffic. I always tell my students: Humans make mistakes, but autonomous systems also freeze up in unpredictable situations. So there should always be an option to intervene. Still, if you’ve ever experienced it as a passenger, you’ll understand that moment of relief!
