The biggest concern about autonomous driving technology is probably its performance in complex traffic situations. For example, when I have my students build Arduino-based autonomous vehicles for robotics projects, I see how even simple lane-following systems struggle in unexpected scenarios (sudden obstacles, pedestrians crossing). In real-world traffic, the algorithm needs to predict every possibility and react almost as fast as human reflexes—which is still in its infancy.
But I should also mention that systems like Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) or Waymo’s services in Phoenix are quite reliable in routine parts of traffic. I always tell my students: Humans make mistakes, but autonomous systems also freeze up in unpredictable situations. So there should always be an option to intervene. Still, if you’ve ever experienced it as a passenger, you’ll understand that moment of relief!
