An electric vehicle is first and foremost a car that runs on electricity stored in rechargeable batteries. The heart of the system is the electric motor: instant, silent, and far more efficient than a combustion engine. No combustion, no clutch, just a direct transmission that converts energy into motion. But all of this relies on batteries, often lithium-ion today, which present two major challenges: range (distance traveled between two charges) and charging time (between 20 minutes and several hours depending on power). Range depends on several factors: battery capacity (in kWh), vehicle energy efficiency, driving style, outside temperature… Some models claim 400 km, others over 600 km, but reality is often less optimistic. For charging, there are two main options: a home outlet (slow but available everywhere) or fast chargers (80% charge in 30 minutes). In terms of the environment, this is a technology in progress. Direct emissions? Zero when in use. But the overall lifecycle must be considered: battery production (lithium and cobalt extraction, ecological impact), the electricity used for charging (renewable or not), and recycling of components… Finally, the surrounding ecosystem is booming: we’re hearing more and more about wireless charging, lighter batteries, and second-life solutions for used batteries (e.g., solar energy storage).

Ah, electric cars, a real paradigm shift compared to internal combustion ones! If I had to draw a parallel with hardware, I'd say it's like going from an old PC with a hard drive and an aging processor to a modern gaming setup with an NVMe SSD and multi-core CPU. On one side you have a heavy, noisy, and inefficient system (internal combustion), on the other, an optimized, responsive, and energy-efficient architecture. Except here, instead of a PC overheating, it's an entire industry that has to manage the thermal challenges of batteries! And then there's the refueling question: no need to drive around gas stations with your charging cable in hand like you'd fiddle with an old USB 1.0 peripheral. Here, at home, I plug it in and go to sleep (or do something else) while it charges, like my Raspberry Pi compiling code in the background. Except my two-ton beast does it in a few hours compared to a whole night for a tiny nano-computer!
