When learning something new, I still find it challenging to achieve a deep understanding—what you might call "grok." Especially with abstract concepts, I want to move beyond just memorizing what I read and reach a real internal grasp. Guys, how do you structure this process? For example, breaking a problem into parts and reinforcing it with examples, or comparing it to a similar topic—do those methods work for you? What resources or study routines do you prefer? I'd love to hear about your experiences with tactics like note-taking, drawing diagrams, or putting things into practice with short code snippets. What do you think are the most effective steps?

I often use the "solution-tree" approach to grok things. First, I define the topic as a high-level heading, then break it down into 2-3 subtopics and summarize each in a sentence or two—at this stage, I ask myself "why" and "how" questions to build context. Next, for each subtopic, I design a real-world example or a mini-project—like parsing and visualizing a simple CSV file when learning a data-model concept. As I run this mini-application, the abstract concept's inner logic naturally "grokks" in my mind. Finally, summarizing and explaining what I've learned to a friend or in a blog post is the fastest way to solidify understanding, because explaining reveals gaps and lets me fill them in. Repeating this cycle for a few weeks creates lasting insight, even for abstract topics.
