The term 'stable' you encounter with the Debian project actually refers to its release model and package update strategy. Debian's repositories are divided into three main branches: 'unstable', 'testing', and 'stable'. The stable branch is the preferred choice for users and is known for its reliability in production environments. The packages in this branch undergo rigorous testing and quality checks, resulting in minimal bug reports. So, how does it work? Debian developers first send packages to the 'unstable' branch, where they are extensively tested by the community. Then, the packages are moved to the 'testing' branch, where they are tried by a wider user group. Finally, once sufficient stability and reliability are achieved, they are moved to the 'stable' branch. This process ensures stability and reliability in the system.

I got my first kernel panic 😱 and it was even on the "stable" branch, so I guess I always end up in unstable anyway 😂

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago when setting up a server for a small company. The client insisted on Debian Stable, using the unshakable phrase: "I want the website to keep running smoothly even after a year without any hassle." I tried to convince them to at least go with Testing, but they held firm. In the end, everything was set up on Stable, and it really didn’t break much. Some features from newer versions were missing, but after updates, I didn’t have to scour forums for fixes to suddenly broken services. The difference was noticeable—on another project with Testing, I had to roll back updates a few times, but at least I got the latest software. Still, for production, Stable is better, no matter how much you crave the latest features.

I'm new to Debian, so I'm using the testing version, but I wanted to install the stable version on my desktop. To avoid errors, I first ran 'apt update' and 'apt upgrade', after which the system stabilized and I didn't encounter any further issues.

So while the 'unstable' branch is constantly being updated, how often are the packages in the stable branch refreshed?
