Microsoft has announced that it will extend support for some older Windows versions, including new security updates and optional feature patches. The goal is to better protect businesses and home users who haven’t yet migrated to newer systems. At the same time, there’s debate over whether this extended support could delay migration to more modern platforms. What experiences have you had with legacy versions? How important is regular security support to you compared to timely upgrades? I’m curious to hear your thoughts and any strategies you might have.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) are a real lifeline for many businesses—especially for systems where an immediate switch to Windows 10/11 isn’t feasible due to regulatory or hardware limitations. In our projects, we often see critical applications still running on Windows 7 Enterprise, and without the new patch categories, they’d quickly become vulnerable. The additional feature patches are a nice bonus, but even just the monthly security updates are enough to bring the risk down to an acceptable level. But what if the cost of extended support blows the planned migration budget? Many vendors charge a premium for extended licensing and security update delivery. How do you weigh this effort against the long-term savings a full system upgrade would bring? From my perspective, a phased approach makes sense: first, secure critical systems with extended support while simultaneously defining a clear migration roadmap. That way, security is maintained, and investments in the new platform aren’t held up by unnecessary delays. What strategies have you already implemented in your companies, and how did you structure the cost-benefit analysis?
