In terms of performance, kernel restructuring could improve energy efficiency and reduce response times in parallel tasks. However, will users relying on legacy software not optimized for the new architecture face compatibility issues requiring workarounds?
There’s no doubt that the shift to a unified architecture will redefine security and efficiency standards, but what scenarios might impose additional restrictions on third-party apps in the near future?
When I switched to a MacBook Pro with the M1 chip two years ago, I noticed a huge difference in the speed of running heavy applications like Docker and Xcode compared to my previous Intel-based machine. Apple’s security enhancements—such as software notarization and the enforced System Integrity Protection (SIP)—made the development environment more stable, reducing my exposure to viruses that sometimes crept into third-party tools.
That said, I did face some early limitations. Some older tools relying on kernel extensions weren’t yet supported on Apple Silicon, so I had to use Rosetta 2 or find updated alternatives. Over time, though, as macOS received continuous updates, compatibility gradually improved, and I could take full advantage of the performance and security benefits without temporary workarounds. Overall, I think the current direction adds significant value to users, even if some temporary constraints might appear during the transition.
