On Ubuntu desktop, I switch my preference based on the use case. If I want to use system resources as efficiently as possible, I go for a minimal GNOME setup—like installing Ubuntu Server and then adding only the GNOME Base. If you're someone who lives in the terminal or runs older hardware, this version really makes a difference. Especially on ARM-based devices or machines with less than 4GB of RAM, a finely tuned GNOME version is the way to go.
For richer features and a more polished visual experience, I use either the standard Ubuntu desktop (GNOME in its default form) or Ubuntu MATE. Even though MATE is lightweight, it offers a nostalgic Windows-like interface, making it a great pick for users who love older hardware. I’ve also tried KDE Plasma, but I feel more at home with GNOME-based environments—my muscle memory for keyboard shortcuts and window management is deeply tied to it. Ultimately, user needs and hardware limitations are the main factors in choosing a desktop environment.
Got a 3-month-old Ubuntu running Python? If the machine is lagging or you just want to keep Python performance sharp, stick with the default GNOME—it's simple and still responsive. Ever tried running Python scripts in a minimal environment like XFCE just to see the speed difference?
