I'm about to start my first engine swap and I'm trying to figure out the most reliable workflow. What steps do you usually follow from initial measurement to final tuning? Should I prioritize a detailed mock‑up before tearing anything apart, or go straight to removing the old engine and fitting the new block? How do you handle wiring and ECU integration in a way that minimizes rewiring? Any tips on documentation, torque specs, or common pitfalls would be great. How would you approach this project as a beginner?

When I tackled my first swap on a ’98 Civic, I built a cardboard mock‑up of the new engine mounts and recorded every measurement before I even lifted the car, which saved a ton of trial‑and‑error later. Then I removed the old engine, kept the original wiring harness, swapped in a stand‑alone ECU, and logged all torque specs and connector locations in a quick spreadsheet plus photos, so I could double‑check everything and avoid re‑torquing mistakes.
