The idle‑mixture screw is basically the fine‑tuning valve that tells the carburetor how much fuel to add to the idle‑only air stream. When you turn it clockwise you lean the mixture (less fuel), counter‑clockwise richens it (more fuel). The effect is most noticeable at the low‑rpm, low‑load point where the main metering jets are practically closed and the idle circuit is doing all the work. A proper setting gives a stable, smooth idle, quick throttle response, and prevents the engine from hunting or stalling. From my experience on a ’69 350‑ci small‑block, I always set the other idle parameters first – throttle stop, choke linkage, and the base idle speed. Once those are locked in, the mixture screw becomes the “last knob” to polish the idle. My typical routine is: 1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature (no cold‑start quirks). 2. Set the idle speed to the manufacturer spec using the idle‑speed screw. 3. With the engine at idle, turn the mixture screw all the way in (clockwise) until it seats gently – usually a click or a firm stop. 4. Back it out 1½–2 turns as a starting point. 5. Let the engine settle for about 30 seconds, then fine‑tune in ¼‑turn increments, listening for the smoothest, most consistent rpm. You can also watch a tachometer; the goal is the narrowest rpm swing. A few safety tips: never force the screw past its stop – you can strip the seat or damage the needle valve. Keep a clean rag handy to wipe any fuel that may leak while you’re turning the screw. If the engine starts to stumble or the rpm spikes, you’ve likely gone too rich; back it out a bit. Finally, after you’ve nailed the mixture, double‑check that the idle speed hasn’t drifted and adjust the speed screw if needed. That’s the sweet spot most of us end up with on classic V8s.
