I built a budget PC last year that’s still holding up surprisingly well, so I’ve got some real-world insights to share. My main goal was light gaming (think indie titles and older AAA games on low settings) plus basic productivity, so I focused on efficiency over raw power. Went with a Ryzen 5 5600 (used off eBay for ~$120) paired with a B550 board—AM4 platform’s still solid for upgrades, and those chips are dirt cheap now. For RAM, 16GB DDR4 3200MHz was the sweet spot; anything faster barely moved the needle for my use case. Storage was a 1TB NVMe for the OS and games, with a 2TB HDD as a scratch disk for temp files and media.
The GPU was the trickiest part—ended up snagging a used RX 580 8GB for around $150. It’s not a powerhouse, but it’s perfect for 1080p medium settings and handles workloads like video editing surprisingly well. Power draw sits at ~300W under load, which keeps my 650W PSU far from stressed. Cooling-wise, a simple 240mm AIO and a couple of 120mm case fans were enough to keep temps in check. The whole build came in around $600 at the time, and honestly, it outperforms my old i5-4690 + GTX 970 rig in every way.
Long-term thinking helped too. The B550 board lets me swap in a Ryzen 7 or 5000-series CPU later without needing a new platform, and the RX 580’s VRAM headroom means I won’t hit a ceiling for at least a couple more years. Even the NVMe drive is future-proof—upgrading storage is cheap and easy. If someone asked for a strict office build, I’d push the CPU toward a Ryzen 5 5500 (if they’re okay with no integrated graphics) and free up budget for 8GB DDR4 + 512GB SSD combo. RAM upgrades are dirt cheap these days, so even 16GB+ is manageable later.
