When should a V6 be preferred over an inline‑four for street‑legal performance builds?

I'm trying to understand the trade‑offs between a V6 and an inline‑four when designing a street‑legal performance car. Specifically, how do factors like torque curve, weight distribution, engine packaging, and overall drivetrain efficiency influence the decision? Are there scenarios where the smoother power delivery of a V6 outweighs the potential weight savings of a smaller inline‑four? I'd love to hear experiences or theoretical insights from anyone who's tackled this balance.

In my modest build, I found the V6 only worth the extra weight when I needed a broad, mid‑range torque curve for daily drivability—especially if the car’s front‑to‑rear balance was already rear‑biased and could handle the slightly taller engine bay. If you can live with a peaky powerband and want the lightest possible chassis, the inline‑four’s compact size and lower mass usually give you better overall efficiency and handling. So pick the V6 when smooth, usable torque outweighs a few kilos of front‑end weight; otherwise stick with the four‑cylinder.
