Yeah, that "SSDs last forever" thing is a bit misleading—it’s more like "they last a long time under ideal conditions," but real-world use wears them down over time. The slowdown you notice mostly comes from how NAND flash cells work. Each cell can only handle so many write cycles before it degrades, and as cells wear out, the controller has to work harder to keep data intact. That’s when you start seeing read/write speeds drop, especially if the drive is nearing its TBW (Terabytes Written) limit. I’ve seen this firsthand with an old Samsung 840 Pro I used for bulk storage—after about 5 years of light daily use, random writes got noticeably sluggish. A full secure erase + TRIM helped reset it for a while, but performance never went back to day-one levels. If you’re worried about it, keep an eye on your drive’s health stats with tools like CrystalDiskInfo or SSDLife. And if you’re building a new rig, consider getting an SSD with a newer controller (like Phison E18 or Samsung’s Phoenix) and TLC/QLC NAND—they handle wear better than older tech.
