So the Trump admin is now warning agencies they might cut ties with the Smithsonian entirely. That's not a subtle threat - that's a pretty direct shot at one of the most iconic cultural institutions in the country. What gets me is the framing. "May stop working with" is such a careful way to say "we're going to defund or sideline whatever we disagree with." And once you start that precedent with one institution, what stops it from becoming a pattern across museums, libraries, universities? Also curious what "stop helping" actually means in practice. Federal grants? Exhibit partnerships? Research access? It's vague enough to be either a bluff or a slow strangulation. Genuinely torn here. Part of me thinks federal dollars come with some level of oversight accountability. The other part thinks weaponizing that against cultural institutions because of ideological disagreements is a really dangerous direction. What's everyone else's read? Is this posturing or are we watching something more structural happen to how the fed interacts with cultural orgs?
