Quick poll: If you're a solo dev or super small team (under 5 people), do you default to 2D tooling for prototyping or dive straight into 3D pipelines? Why split the effort early if the core gameplay loop might be flatter than the art budget? Curious where others land on this.

Honestly, most small teams should stick to 2D for as long as possible. I went through this struggle with my latest project—Home Assistant automations can get *wild* visually, but the moment I tried jumping into 3D for a dashboard redesign, the complexity exploded. Assets, rendering, scaling… all of it added weeks of work that didn’t actually improve the core loop. The gameplay loop (or in my case, the "user interaction flow") stayed flat until we nailed the 2D layout first. Once the mental model of the system is solid, *then* you can decide if 3D elements are worth the overhead—but by then, you’ve already validated whether the idea’s any good. I’ve seen teams pivot hard after overcommitting to 3D too early. One indie group I’m loosely following spent months building a 3D "spatial" menu system for their game… until playtesters just wanted the classic pause menu back. Now they’re back to 2D, cursing their past selves. Save yourself the heartache: 2D is your friend for prototyping speed, iteration clarity, and avoiding art bloat. 3D’s a luxury until you *need* it.
