I lean toward a middle-ground setup—mostly because my time is split between dev work and other stuff. A small server running Proxmox gives me virtualized environments to test different services without dedicating physical hardware, and if something breaks, I can just roll back a container. It’s flexible when I need to tweak things manually, but I still avoid the hassle of full bare-metal config unless the project demands it. Plus, power consumption stays reasonable for a 24/7 box.
If I’m feeling lazy or setting up something short-term, a Raspberry Pi cluster with Docker Compose gets the job done—low effort, low cost, and easy to swap nodes if hardware fails. But for anything that needs reliability, I’d rather avoid single-board fragility and stick with the Proxmox rig.

With the Pi cluster, I can run everything from Nextcloud to a home-grown VPN without breaking a sweat—and when something breaks, it’s usually a $5 part and a 30-minute fix. Sometimes the old-school way is still the best way.
I like the middle path with a Raspberry Pi cluster—cheap to run, easy to expand, and still gives you full control without dealing with enterprise hardware.
