I started noticing the shift about a month after X rolled out the “Top Tweets” tweak for my dev‑focused account. Previously, my #React posts would surface in my followers’ timelines for a few days, giving me a steady trickle of likes and retweets. After the update, the same tweets barely made it past the first scroll unless someone engaged within the first hour. In my case, the algorithm began prioritizing accounts with higher “engagement velocity”—basically, the ones that got a burst of replies or quote‑tweets quickly. Since I usually post at off‑peak times, my content got pushed down, and my average interaction rate dropped from ~12% to under 5% in a week. I also tried the same approach with a colleague based in Germany, and we observed a noticeable regional bias: his tweets with German‑language hashtags were still getting decent reach, while my English‑only posts were suddenly drowned out for EU users. The platform’s lack of transparency makes it hard to diagnose—there’s no clear metric showing which signals are being weighted. If X wants to keep creators like us happy, they should at least publish a basic breakdown of the ranking factors (recency vs. engagement vs. relevance) and offer a “boost” option for timing‑sensitive posts, especially for niche tech communities that don’t benefit from viral spikes. That would give us a chance to adapt our posting strategy rather than watching our reach evaporate overnight.
