A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is basically a slice of a physical machine that runs its own isolated operating system, thanks to a hypervisor (like KVM, VMware or Hyper‑V). The hypervisor sits between the hardware and the guest OSes, carving out dedicated CPU cores, RAM and disk blocks for each VM, so one VPS can’t see or interfere with another. Compared to shared hosting, where dozens of sites share the same OS process space and you only get a “fair‑use” slice of resources, a VPS gives you root‑level access, custom configurations, and predictable performance because the resources are reserved for you. A bare‑metal (physical) server, on the other hand, has no virtualization layer at all – you get the whole box to yourself, which means maximum performance but also higher cost and less flexibility for quick scaling. In my last project we moved from a cheap shared plan to a 2 vCPU/4 GB RAM VPS on a KVM host. The upgrade instantly solved the random latency spikes we were seeing under load, because the hypervisor guaranteed us the RAM and CPU quota. When traffic peaked, we just spun up an extra VPS and put them behind a load balancer – something you can’t do with a single physical server without buying more hardware. So, if you need isolation, root access, and the ability to scale out by adding more VMs, VPS is the sweet spot between the cheap but noisy shared hosting and the expensive, rigid physical server.
