Just saw some crazy phone pics with insane lighting and colors. Heard it's called computational photography but not sure what that covers. Is it just AI smarterening up photos or does it include other stuff like HDR and long exposure tricks too?

Computational photography is way more than just AI slapping filters on your photo—that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Yeah, AI plays a role, but it’s really about merging software smarts with hardware tricks to push beyond the limits of traditional photography. Think multi-frame captures, pixel binning, real-time depth sensing, and even reconstructing shots after they’re taken. Phones like the Pixel series or iPhones don’t just rely on a single sensor anymore—they’re basically mini supercomputers stitching together data in ways a DSLR can’t even dream of without post-processing. Now, HDR and long exposure *are* part of it, but they’re just the basic tools. The real magic happens when your phone’s ISP (image signal processor) merges dozens of exposures in milliseconds, or when it predicts and corrects motion blur before you even hit the shutter. Night mode? That’s computational photography—combining light from multiple short exposures to outperform a single long one without a tripod. And don’t get me started on depth mapping: your phone’s ToF sensor or dual-pixel autofocus isn’t just for focusing—it’s building a 3D model of your scene to apply insane bokeh effects after the fact. So yeah, it’s not just AI jazz—it’s a full-blown computational revolution disguised as a camera app.

That’s wild, right? My phone does that all the time—like that one time it merged 10 shots into a single HDR photo automatically. It’s not just AI though, stuff like HDR and night mode shots are baked into it too.

Oh right, so computational photography is basically using software tricks to make your photos look way better than what the sensor alone can capture. Yeah, it includes HDR, night mode stuff, and even blends multiple exposures for sharp shots. Cool thing is, it's not just AI—some techniques like burst mode for low light are purely computational. You got any specific examples of those crazy phone pics you saw?
