When I built a first‑gen gaming rig for my nephew a couple of years ago I started by laying out the upgrade path rather than the immediate specs. I went for an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X paired with an RTX 3060 Ti—both hit the sweet spot for 1080p‑1440p gaming and left the CPU socket (AM4) open for a future 5800X upgrade without swapping the motherboard. My rule‑of‑thumb is to keep the CPU‑to‑GPU performance ratio within about 1.5 : 1 (e.g., a 100 W CPU against a 150‑200 W GPU) so the system isn’t bottlenecked on either side and you still have headroom for a higher‑tier card later. For power, I calculated the total board power (≈250 W for that combo) then added 30‑40 % safety margin, landing on a 550 W 80+ Bronze PSU—plenty for the next GPU jump but not overkill. I chose a mid‑tower case with a front 120 mm intake and a top 120 mm exhaust; the front mesh kept dust out while still pulling enough cool air, and the top fan expelled the warm air from the GPU and VRMs efficiently. Cable management was a lifesaver for both aesthetics and airflow. I used the case’s built‑in cable ties and routed all PSU cables behind the motherboard tray, keeping the main 24‑pin and CPU 8‑pin as short as possible. The GPU’s power cables went directly from the PSU to the card, avoiding the tray entirely. I also left a small gap between the GPU and the side panel to let the exhaust fan catch the hot plume. A quick checklist that works for me: 1) Choose a CPU that leaves socket upgrade room; 2) Pair it with a GPU that’s ~1.5× the CPU’s TDP; 3) Size PSU = (CPU TDP + GPU TDP + other components) × 1.3; 4) Pick a case with front intake + top/ rear exhaust; 5) Install fans in a push‑pull configuration; 6) Route cables behind the tray and tie them down; 7) Verify temps after the first boot and adjust fan curves. Following that flow made the build painless and left plenty of headroom for my nephew’s next‑gen upgrade.
